Dog that couldn't leave the basement

Only a short number of years ago, a family lived in a small, wooden house on Livingstone Street. The family had a young son. On those days when the weather forced him to play inside, the small boy was more than content to wile away the hours playing down in the basement of the old house.

The boy played by himself, but at the same time, he never seemed to be alone. His mother could hear him talking as he amused himself, as if he was chatting with someone else. One day, she asked her son to whom he was speaking.

"My dog," replied the boy.

"Does your dog have a name?" asked his mother, smiling to herself.

"No," said the boy, seeming quite content that his invisible pet remained nameless.

"Does he go with you to school?" she asked, playing along.

"No," said the boy again. "He can't leave the basement."

The mother thought that having an imaginary pet was relatively harmless. In fact, she was more concerned about the state of the basement itself than she was about her son's active imagination. The walls had never been finished properly. The concrete floor was uneven and cracked and looked as if it had been poured in great haste.

Surprise discovery

She found a workman who was willing to redo her basement and on the first day he was available, the woman showed him exactly what she wanted done.

"My son plays down here all the time," she told the workman. "He has an invisible dog which he claims can't leave the basement."

The workman only nodded, more concerned with the practical issues of how he was going to start work than he was about an imaginary beast. The wife went upstairs and the man set to work with a sledgehammer, breaking up the concrete floor.

The house rang with the sound of the man breaking up the old floor and dust started to seep under the crack of the basement door. Then, suddenly, the sound of the blows ceased.

For awhile there was silence. Then the sound of footsteps slowly climbed the cellar stairs. The workman emerged from the depths and called out to the owner.

"Miss," he said. "I think you better take a look at this."

"What is it?" she asked.

"I think you better just look," he replied.

Together, they went back down the rickety stairs to the basement through a cloud of dust. The man brought her to where he had started to break up the old concrete floor, revealing the dirt beneath the house. The man picked up a heavy iron pry rod and slipped one end of it under a large chunk of concrete. He heaved up the concrete, flipped it over with a great thud, and then stepped back out of the way. The wife gave a great gasp and felt the blood drain from her face.

There, uncovered from where it had lain hidden for countless years, lay the skeleton of what could only be a large dog.

In shock, the woman stared down at the skeleton of the hound, speechless.

"Get rid of it," she said, finally. "I don't care what you do with it. Just get it out of my house."

The man nodded as the woman fled the basement. He removed the old bones along with the rest of the broken up concrete. Work progressed without further incident.

A new floor was laid, the walls plastered and painted, and before too long the basement was finished. The workman was paid and went on to his next job in another part of the city. The wife never mentioned the bones to her husband, or to her young son.

From that point on, on those days when the weather forced him to play inside, the small boy was more than content to wile away the hours playing down in the new basement of the old house. But he played alone, quietly, and his imaginary dog was never mentioned again.

Commentary:

Now this is an aspect of the paranormal that I truly find interesting. How to validate or attribute that a haunting is that of a past family pet or animal that resided on the land. Would the animal make a noise when asked? Would it understand what your asking and respond in the case of EVP? (In the case of cats, I don't think it matters which side of the Veil they're on, they would only respond if it suited them.) How do you discern the animal noise you heard on an EVP is that living or dead if you capture a sample?

I've spoken with several people who say they're beloved family pets still visit or reside with them. Several personal experience point to physical contact -- nudging, nuzzling, pressure on the bed where the animal frequently laid. Several personal experiences point to sounds -- the clicking of nails on the floors, stray animal sounds with no locateable source. There were even a few olfactory reports of smelling the animals.

One lady recounted that on several occasions she has been visited by the family's deceased cat at night. This particular cat would hop on the foot of the bed and stroll up to the pillow upon which she was sleeping and then curl around her head. She stated that on multiple occasion, especially when she or other family members sorely missed the cat, that it would come and assume the position on the pillow -- warmth an all.

Another lady recounted the return of the family dog on several occasions. That the visit left a change in the air, the smell of the dog and a "feeling" of its' presence.

I'd love to hear anyone's encounters with animal hauntings or thoughts/insight on the subject. Feel free to share your experience with animal hauntings or children's interaction with entities.

As always -- feedback is welcome.

Haunted Leicester- an article

Grace Dieu

Does a white lady wander here?

Paranormal Priory?

Many souls had sought salvation at Grace Dieu Priory and with mysterious occurrences becoming increasingly frequent, it could be claimed that several remain. Could sightings of a white lady be attributed to the disruption of its founder's grave?

There are numerous reports of paranormal experiences at Grace Dieu over the past 80 years.

* Watch: Grace Dieu Priory >

Watch the video to find out more about Grace Dieu's ghostly goings-on...

In 1926, a horse pulling a cart stopped and began trembling before six white figures were seen to drift across the road and move into the ruins.

Bus shelter near Grace Dieu

A youngster playing cricket on Grace Dieu Park in 1934 noticed a white figure moving along a nearby footpath. He watched the apparition with two of his friends as it went under a railway embankment only to disappear before they had reached the archway to look through the tunnel.

One of the most fascinating reports was made in 1954 when a bus driver stopped at the bus stop opposite the ruins to let a woman dressed in white aboard. When the doors opened, there was nobody there.

The conductor and driver both got off the bus to look for the lady but found nothing. He was not the last bus driver to be caught out as another driver slowed down to stop for a figure that vanished in 2002.

A popular explanation for the supernatural activity is that the figure is the ghost of Rose de Verdon, the founder of Grace Dieu Priory. She had been laid to rest at the Priory before being re-interred at nearby Belton Church.

Many people believe Rose's spirit was disturbed during this process and roams the ruins in the form of the white lady who, it is often reported, has no facial features or feet.

Did two ghostly figures roam here?

While a number of the recorded supernatural encounters involve sightings of the white lady, others involve the energy surrounding Grace Dieu.

A medium named Tarona was driving past Grace Dieu when she felt drawn to the ruins by the energy encompassing them. She reported a negative energy, having sensed betrayal, murder and the plague.

But, with so little information ever being provided from within the walls of the Priory, it is unknown whether these events Tarona sensed ever happened.

A number of unanswered questions remain about Grace Dieu. Is there really a ghost? Is Rose's spirit doomed to wander the grounds for eternity? One thing is certain, there's something spooky about Grace Dieu.

Pirate ghosts and hidden treasure

Taken from The Telegram-- St John's Newfoundland-Labrador
Last updated at 8:42 AM on 11/08/08

DALE JARVIS
The Telegram

There are numerous locations across Newfoundland and Labrador that boast piratical phantoms. The community of Boxey on the south coast of Newfoundland, almost midway between English Harbour West and Coombs Cove, was one such locale.

In the 19th Century, Boxey was well known for an opening or "spy hole" in a local rock formation. The hole was used by local sailors to navigate safely amid treacherous rocks in the bay.

According to local legend, a man named Jacob Penney and his companion, Simon Bungay, ran aground close to the spy hole. It was said spirits had tricked them into running their boat onto the rocks.

The two men had been on a treasure hunt to haunted Deadman's Bight, just up the coast from Boxey, when the boat ran aground.

The legend goes the men were able to pull the boat off the rocks and continue on the hunt for the buried treasure. The twosome arrived at what was reported to be the location of the treasure, but their misadventure on the rocks had cost them valuable time.

They arrived just in time to catch a glimpse of the fabulous treasure before a rock door slammed shut before it. The treasure was never recovered.
Another community with active pirate ghosts is Portland Creek, on the west coast of the island. The local ghosts are said to be the phantom remains of pirates who made the cove the location of their secret treasure hoard. According to different versions of the legend, the pirates had either been shipwrecked in the area, or had sought out the cove purposefully. Either way, it was said they had buried their gold there and that they had returned year after year gradually picking it up.
One intriguing claim has been made which states that, at one point, Portland Creek was so haunted by pirate ghosts that it was nearly impossible to keep a dog in the community. Apparently the dogs, sensitive to the phantom menace, were driven wild by paranormal visitors and would keep owners up with their nightly howling.

Portland Creek lies in a C-shaped cove, and if one stands in the middle of the beach looking out, the two points of the cove can be seen curving in towards one another. The most visible manifestation of the ghostly buccaneers were lights that would appear on one of the points.

The apparitions would materialize on the beach at dusk. They took the form of flickering lights, looking almost like lanterns. No one could find any explanation for them, other than that they were the ghosts of the pirates returning to look for and dig up their buried gold.

Some houses in the community were also troubled by spirits. One man by the name of Payne was particularly tormented by the phantoms. Night after night, he and his wife would be in bed and hear the sound of dishes rattling downstairs. They would go downstairs to find the kitchen empty.

Payne would quite often get into his bed and feel someone, or something, slowly pulling the bedclothes from the bed. Eventually, this became too much for the man. One night as he got into the bed, he felt the ghostly tugging at his blankets.

"Listen here, buddy," said the angry fellow. "You might be taking the bed, but you are not getting my blankets!"

He got out, took the blankets and went downstairs. Presumably, he got a good night's sleep, pirate ghosts or no pirate ghosts.

Japanese Ghost Season - an article

COURTESY OF TOKYO DOME CITY PHOTO
(Taken from the Japanese Times)
http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20080812i1.html
It's ghost season in Japan — who you gonna call?

By JUN HONGO Staff writer

The creature walks: A ghost emerges through a door in Yurei Bukken, a haunted house at the Tokyo Dome City amusement park in Bunkyo Ward. The limited feature runs through Sept. 15.

If there are eerie goings-on in the neighborhood — and Halloween is still two months off — it could be because Japan's traditional "ghost season" maxes out at this time of the year.

While belief in the afterlife and in wandering spirits kept from peaceful rest can be found anywhere in the world, ghosts in Japan take on a unique persona. Gripping tales of phantasms have been made into Hollywood movies, including the hugely popular "The Ring," serving up story lines featuring grudges, curses and spine-chilling plots.

Following are questions and answers about Japan's ghosts and their background:

What do Japan's ghosts look like?

Called "yurei" (faint spirits), ghosts typically wear a white garment and triangular forehead cloth. This is rooted in the way the dead are traditionally laid to rest in white Buddhist burial kimono, and is the preferred attire for the deceased to travel to the other world.

Japanese-style haunted houses at amusement parks will most likely feature a pale-looking ghost with wild black hair, arms stretched forward and wrists dangling. Japanese ghosts are also usually legless. Experts theorize that this is a reflection of their supernatural powers.

Why is summer ghost season in Japan?

Mid-August is considered a spiritual season because of Buddhist traditions. Many honor the dead during Bon by gathering and paying respects at ancestral graves.

The date and customs vary depending on region, but family members typically meet on Aug. 13 and begin a bonfire called "mukae-bi." It is believed the practice brings souls of the dead back from the other world.

After cleaning family graves, families greet and show respect for the dead by chanting sutras and preparing special meals.

The souls are sent back to the other world with "okuri-bi" bonfires, which are usually lit on Aug. 16.

How do Japanese and non-Japanese ghosts differ?

Most ghosts are generally considered to be wandering souls of the dead that are deprived of a peaceful rest.

But religious backgrounds and concepts of death lead to significant differences, said Haruo Suwa, a professor emeritus at Gakushuin University.

While Western religions, including Christianity, and even Islam of the East, believe in the existence of one deity, divinity is omnipresent in Shinto. Beliefs held in Japan include the notion that men can be transformed after death into supernatural beings.

Whereas Western ghosts may be regarded as the extension of one's self after death, a yurei was originally believed to be godlike.

This belief can be observed in the fact that Japanese ghosts are usually depicted without legs or only from the waist up, to demonstrate the individual has been transformed from what it was when alive, Suwa said.

Why are ghosts often depicted as being vengeful and bearing a grudge?

According to Suwa, whose published works include "Nihon no Yurei" ("Japanese Ghosts"), ghost tales have been documented since the early eighth century in the Heian Period.

Beliefs in supernatural beings were common even before that, he said.

But the yurei of ancient times was considered harmless and even favorable. They only manifested grudges and eeriness with the spread of Buddhism throughout the country.

"The religious perception of heaven and hell came into Japan" with the new religion, Suwa said, noting the Buddhist theory of reincarnation and folklore-inspired supernatural beasts helped redefine the concept of yurei. Ghosts "eventually became visually terrifying," Suwa said.

Folklore, in which ghosts are portrayed as the soul of someone robbed of life and deprived of a peaceful afterlife, also influenced the characteristics of Japanese ghosts. Today it is widely believed a yurei returns to the world to exact revenge, and will not stop until its goal is met.

One notable tale is "Yotsuya Kaidan" ("Yotsuya Ghost Story"), which is probably one of the most famous in Japan.

The tale of vengeance takes place in Edo Period Tokyo in the Yotsuya district, featuring Oiwa and her husband, Iemon. Eager to marry an affluent neighbor, Iemon poisons Oiwa, causing her hair to fall out and leaving her face disfigured. Oiwa dies but returns as a ghost and exacts her revenge, killing her husband.

The story was originally written as a play in 1825 and was later adapted for kabuki and movie scripts.

How can one stop being haunted by ghosts?

In the Christianized West, holy water and crosses may help ward off ghosts, but they won't keep their Japanese counterparts, buried under Shinto or Buddhist rites, at bay.

Instead, "ofuda" strips inscribed with Buddhist sutras are believed to be effective in keeping evil spirits away. Some Shinto shrines also provide "oharai," a purification ritual that removes bad omens with wooden wands and chants.

Do ghosts really exist in Japan?

Some sites, notably cemeteries, tunnels and old battlefields, generate ghost sightings. Widely known folklore has it that ghosts are most likely to appear between 2 and 3 a.m., the "time of the three oxes."

Gakushuin's Suwa says he "can't tell if ghosts exist."

"But it is a fact that many Japanese believe in the existence of supernatural spirits. Studying the beliefs and their background is key to understanding Japanese customs and people."

For those who do believe in ghosts, is there any way to detect them?

Try Baketan 2, a ghost detecting gadget that Tokyo-based Solid Alliance Corp. sells online for ¥1,980.

The detector runs on a single lithium-ion battery and captures the "specific rhythm of ultrawaves in an area" that are supernaturally aligned, according to Solid Alliance spokesman Shuichiro Saito.

The detector also translates what the maker calls "spatial algorithms" into electronic sounds, warning the user if a supernatural being is approaching.

Solid Alliance claims on its Web site that Baketan 2 reacted strongly when tested at sites that are deemed haunted. The gadget maker clearly states that the product is a toy, but the hit series has sold more than 50,000 sets in less than three years.

Prayer of Saint Micheal & Exorcism

The Prayer of Saint Michael

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness
and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke
him, we humbly pray, and do Thou,
O Prince of the Heavenly Host,
by the power of God, cast into Hell,
Satan and all the other evil
spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin souls.
Amen.

Short Version of Prayer of St. Michael

THE HISTORY

The history of this prayer is perhaps not the most solid, however, it's main premise stays the same. Pope Leo XIII wrote and printed this prayer in response to a vision he had. The date of the occurrence, as well the circumstances during which the prayer was created, and its' publication varies from 1884 to 1888. However, the recounting of the vision seems to transcend this confusion.

Pope Leo XIII is said to have had a vision of a conversation between God and Satan (in some cases Jesus and Satan). This visionary episode was said to have happened after a mass or a meeting with the Cardinals. The Pope was said to have collapsed and appeared to be in a trance, a coma or seizure like state. It was the tale he recounted that determined his creation of prayer.

Pope Leo XIII recounted that Satan was stating that with enough power and enough time, that he could destroy the church. (In some recounts it says Christainity.) To which God responds, 'How much time and how much power?' Satan replies, ' A century and influence over those who would give themselves to him.' (In some recountings it says 75 years.) To which God responds to Satan's deadline, 'So be it.'

Pope Leo XIII startled by this vision set out to write the prayer of exocism - The Prayer of Saint Micheal. Pope Leo XIII requested this prayer to issued after every Mass to protect the Church. It was performed until the 1968 when Vatican II decided to dispense with the prayer. Which, on a curious note, right before what would be the return of Satan to overthrow the Church in the 1980's. However, Pope John Paul II reinstituted it 1994 to yet again protect the Church.

Miche'al is believed to be translated as "He who is like God". Michael the Archangel is a key role in Revelations in the Battle for Souls. It is Michael that drove the Fallen Angels from Heaven. A summation by Catholic Herald of Saint Michael's duties include:

St. Michael has four duties:

(1) To continue to wage battle
against Satan and the other fallen angels;
(2) to save the souls of the faithful from the power of
Satan especially at the hour of death;
(3) to protect the People of God, both the Jews of
the Old Covenant and the Christians of the New Covenant;
and
(4) finally to lead the souls of the departed from this life
and present them to our Lord for the particular judgment,
and at the end of time, for the final judgment.

For these reasons, Christian iconography depicts St. Michael as a knight-warrior, wearing battle armor, and wielding a sword or spear, while standing triumphantly on a serpent or other representation of Satan. Sometimes he is depicted holding the scales of justice or the Book of Life, both symbols of the last judgment.

ITS' ROLE IN EXORCISM

As part of an exorcism by either layman or priest (or whatever religious figure presides), the inital step is to protect themselvesand the participants. The prayer of Saint Micheal serves this purpose. There are numerous variations of the prayer but it remains the key in stregnthing not only the convictions of the participants but to "activate" the Divine intervention that is about to occur.

Below is a recount from St. Micheal's World Apostolate of an Exorcism ritual:

Exorcism Against Satan and the Rebellious Angels

Published by Order of His Holiness Pope Leo XIII

The Holy Father exhorts priests to say this prayer as often as possible, as a simple exorcism to curb the power of the devil and prevent him from doing harm. The faithful also may say it in their own name, for the same purpose, as any approved prayer. Its use is recommended whenever action of the devil is suspected, causing malice in men, violent temptations and even storms and various calamities. It could be used as a solemn exorcism (an official and public ceremony, in Latin), to expel the devil. It would then be said by a priest, in the name of the Church and only with a Bishop's permission.

(The crosses (+) below indicate a blessing to be given if a priest recites the Exorcism; if a lay person recites it, they indicate the Sign of the Cross to be made by that person.)

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

+ In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Most glorious Prince of the Celestial Host, Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in the conflict which we have to sustain against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places (Eph. 6.12). Come to the rescue of men whom God has created to His image and likeness, and whom He has redeemed at a great price from
the tyranny of the devil. It is thou whom Holy Church venerates as her guardian and protector; thou whom the Lord has charged to conduct redeemed souls into Heaven. Pray, therefore, the God of Peace to subdue Satan beneath our feet, that he may no longer retain men captive nor do injury to the Church. Present our prayers to the most High, that without delay they may draw His mercy down upon us. Seize the dragon, the old serpent, which is the devil and Satan, bind him and cast him into the bottomless pit, that he may no more seduce the nations (Apoc. 20.2-3).

Exorcism

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, strengthened by the intercession of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of Blessed Michael the Archangel, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and all the Saints, [and powerful in the holy authority of our ministry]*, we confidently undertake to repulse the attacks and deceits of the devil.

*Lay people omit this text

Psalm 67

Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered: and let them that hate Him flee from before His face.

As smoke vanishes, so let them vanish away: as wax melts before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.

V. Behold the Cross of the Lord! Flee, bands of enemies.
R. The Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Offspring of David has conquered.
V. May Thy mercy descend upon us.
R. As great as our hope in Thee.

We drive you from us, whoever you may be, unclean spirits, Satanic powers, infernal invaders, wicked legions, assemblies, and sects.

In the name and by the virtue of Our Lord Jesus Christ +. May you be snatched away and driven from the Church of God and from the souls redeemed by the Precious Blood of the Divine Lamb +.

Cease by your audacity, cunning serpent, to deceive the human race, to persecute the Church, to torment God's elect, and to sift them as wheat +. This is the command made to you by the Most High God +, with Whom in your haughty insolence you still pretend to be equal +. The God Who will have all men to be saved, and to come to the knowledge of the truth (I Tim. 2.4).

God the Father commands you +.
God the Son commands you +.
God the Holy Ghost commands you +.
Christ, the Eternal Word of God made Flesh, commands you +.

He Who to save our race, outdone through your malice, humbled Himself, becoming obedient unto death (Phil. 2.8). He Who has built His Church on the firm rock and declared that the gates of hell shall not prevail against Her, because He dwells with Her all days, even to the consummation of the world (Matt. 28.20).

The hidden virtue of the Cross requires it of you, as does the power of the mysteries of the Christian Faith +.
The glorious Mother of God, the Virgin Mary, commands you +.
She who by Her humility and from the first moment of Her Immaculate Conception crushed your proud head. The faith of the holy Apostles Peter
and Paul and of the other Apostles commands you +.
The blood of the Martyrs and the pious intercession of all the Saints command
you +.

Thus, cursed dragon, and you, wicked legions, we adjure you by the living God +, by the true God +, by the holy God +, by the God Who so loved the world, as to give up His only-begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him may not perish but may have life everlasting (St. John 3.16).

Cease deceiving human creatures and pouring out to them the poison of eternal perdition. Cease harming the Church and hindering her liberty. Retreat, Satan, inventor and master of all deceit, enemy of man's salvation. Cede the place to
Christ in Whom you have found none of your works. Cede the place to the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church acquired by Christ at the price of His Blood. Stoop beneath the all-powerful Hand of God. Tremble and flee at the evocation of the Holy and terrible name of Jesus; this Name which causes hell to tremble; this Name to which the Virtues, Powers and Dominations of Heaven are humbly submissive; this Name which the Cherubim and Seraphim praise unceasingly, repeating: Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord, the God of Hosts.

V. O Lord hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto Thee.
V. May the Lord be with thee.
R. And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

God of Heaven, God of earth, God of Angels, God of Archangels, God of Patriarchs, God of Prophets, God of Apostles, God of Martyrs, God of Confessors, God of Virgins, God who has power to give life after death and rest after work, because there is no other God than Thee and there can be no other, for Thou art the Creator of all things, visible and invisible, of Whose reign there shall be no end. We humbly prostrate ourselves before Thy glorious Majesty and we supplicate Thee to deliver us from all the tyranny of the infernal spirits, from their snares, their lies, and their furious wickedness. Deign, O Lord, to protect us by Thy power and to preserve us safe and sound. We beseech Thee through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

V. From the snares of the devil,
R. Deliver us, O Lord.

V. That Thy Church may serve Thee in peace and liberty,
R. We beseech Thee to hear us.

V. That Thou would crush down all enemies of Thy Church,
R. We beseech Thee to hear us.

(Holy water is sprinkled in the place where we may be.)

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Divine Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who wander throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

*Indulgence of 300 days, plenary under the usual conditions, if this invocation is recited daily during a month.

Imprimatur: + Manuel, Bishop of Barcelona, December 19, 1931

LONG VERSION OF
SAINT MICHEAL'S PRAYER

"O Glorious Prince of the heavenly host, St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in the battle and in the terrible warfare that we are waging against the principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, against the evil spirits. Come to the aid of man, whom Almighty God created immortal, made in His own image and likeness, and redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of Satan.

"Fight this day the battle of the Lord, together with the holy angels, as already thou hast fought the leader of the proud angels, Lucifer, and his apostate host, who were powerless to resist thee, nor was there place for them any longer in Heaven. That cruel, ancient serpent, who is called the devil or Satan who seduces the whole world, was cast into the abyss with his angels. Behold, this primeval enemy and slayer of men has taken courage. Transformed into an angel of light, he wanders about with all the multitude of wicked spirits, invading the earth in order to blot out the name of God and of His Christ, to seize upon, slay and cast into eternal perdition souls destined for the crown of eternal glory. This wicked dragon pours out, as a most impure flood, the venom of his malice on men of depraved mind and corrupt heart, the spirit of lying, of impiety, of blasphemy, and the pestilent breath of impurity, and of every vice and iniquity.

"These most crafty enemies have filled and inebriated with gall and bitterness the Church, the spouse of the immaculate Lamb, and have laid impious hands on her most sacred possessions. In the Holy Place itself, where the See of Holy Peter and the Chair of Truth has been set up as the light of the world, they have raised the throne of their abominable impiety, with the iniquitous design that when the Pastor has been struck, the sheep may be.

"Arise then, O invincible Prince, bring help against the attacks of the lost spirits to the people of God, and give them the victory. They venerate thee as their protector and patron; in thee holy Church glories as her defense against the malicious power of hell; to thee has God entrusted the souls of men to be established in heavenly beatitude. Oh, pray to the God of peace that He may put Satan under our feet, so far conquered that he may no longer be able to hold men in captivity and harm the Church. Offer our prayers in the sight of the Most High, so that they may quickly find mercy in the sight of the Lord; and vanquishing the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, do thou again make him captive in the abyss, that he may no longer seduce the nations. Amen.

V. Behold the Cross of the Lord; be scattered ye hostile powers.
R. The Lion of the tribe of Judah has conquered the root of David.
V. Let Thy mercies be upon us, O Lord.
R. As we have hoped in Thee.
V. O Lord, hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto Thee.

Let us pray.

O God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we call upon Thy holy Name, and as supplicants, we implore Thy clemency, that by the intercession of Mary, ever Virgin Immaculate and our Mother, and of the glorious St. Michael the Archangel, Thou wouldst deign to help us against Satan and all the other unclean spirits who wander about the world for the injury of the human race and the ruin of souls. Amen."

Frank’s Box - A Brief Commentary

After having viewed an episode of Paranormal State where the team instigated contact via a "Frank's Box", I became curious about the device. So I've been researching Frank's Box and other ITC forms for this and upcoming blogs. I haven't used a Frank's Box personally but have talked to a few people who've either used it or been around one.

On the basis of how a Frank's Box work -- it's a modulation and scanning between the AM/FM frequencies and the white and pink noise spectrum, usually only lasting seconds dependent on the basis of the algorithm that the scanning system is protocolled to use. It is in these small spurts of static and broken syllabics that an entity is supposed to be able to capitalize and generate words for
the user to interpret.

Since the Frank's Box does use "in use" frequencies that's where a bit of debate on the credibility lies. Some also argue that cell phones (post-1990's models do not operate within the frequency scanned) and wireless household phones (would have to be pre-1990's to be on the radio band) are contributing to the words popping up. Technology that it may intercept are specifically low band
operators -- existing radio stations, hand held radio sets, baby monitors, some children's toys and ham radios. So with the consideration of these modern encroachments onto an experimental device, the recovery of fallacious responses has to be considered.

Using a Frank's Box also creates the translation/comprehension debate. Largely an investigator is trying to interpret a staticy word, phrase or burst. What one person may interpret as a possible response by an entity using the static may to another sound of pure static. The interpretation is, for the most, purely subjective. Based on ones' demographic and semantics, interpretation of the
Frank's Box encounter may and most likely will vary leaving doubtful evidence.

An additional issue with the Frank's Box is validating the response. Not only verifying the fact but being able to support the device through other methods of investigation. Running of secondary recording equipment might provide this validation. Duplicating the session without the Frank's Box and using other equipment and attaining is the same response will provide additional validation.

Research into the answer and the location may reveal the responses accuracy. Validation of the information attained via the Frank's Box will be crucial to its' accuracy and its' evidentiary property.

Another issue with Frank's Box that's been discussed a lot lately -- repeatable/reproduceable results. Getting an answer to a question once is fine. Rephrase that question and get the same answer is better. Come back a whole different number of times- and get it again -- that's grand! Establishing a successful series of reproduceable results is the best way to develop the Frank's Box as a reliable form of evidence. At present, I've not encountered anyone who has experienced this success unquestionably.

Frank's Box and the other ITC formats are open to so much interpretation. Establishing a series of guidelines/standards like what was done for EVP is highly suggested and needed. Reproducing "successes" numerous times - also highly necessitated to generate a background of reliability. Being able to validate the information and creating a record of the success is also necessary.

Personally --there are too many variables in the use and interpretation with Frank's Box at this point. As evidence-- it should not be proffered by itself -- if you can back it up with other recordings and such, maybe. Too many variables -- including the subjectivity of the investigator -- are standing in the way of the Frank's Box being considered a valuable evidentiary device.

072808 Undisclosed Auditorium
Current mood: curious
Category: Dreams and the Supernatural

I managed to squeeze a little time out of investigation spot, for once it wasn't in use. After reviewing the wee bit of evidence I had, thought I might post an update.

Personal Experience

Approximately five minutes of entering the auditorium, I heard footsteps on the stage. The were slow and evenly spaced but no one to go along with them. I tried to see if it were the boards on the floor where I was standing that might have popped ones closer to the stage but couldn't recreate the sound.

Focus on the stage side room

In March I posted that I kept feeling like someone was looking at me from this room. So I focused my efforts on this location. I tried the video/audio function on my Kodak C643. Which I discovered, requires more light than I had and the screen is totally dark. Chalk that one up to learning. As for the audio, I'll have to play with that some more. I captured to what sounds like a footstep, possibly a second and a distant sounding thud. However, the quality is so low in my opinion, it's not worth sharing.

What I did find interesting was in two photos. I had thought I saw someone pass by the curtains to the stage but being the only one there and not hearing footsteps I dismissed it as a possible light reflection from a window. (This room is actually a wing to the stage it turns out. The windows line both sides of the auditorium.)

I looked at the first picture and then the following one. There appears to be an anomaly behind the curtain. So I enlarged both and in the second one there almost appears to be a face. Which is circled in the photo in the album.

Oh and battery drain.

So that's what I managed from this location and thought I'd update on it.

As always... input welcome.

Thanks for stopping by.

Randy Pausch came from obscurity, dealing with Pancreatic Cancer in a very public forum. What had started off as a message to his children became a message to humanity. He came forward not in glum and pity and expected to receive none in return. What he did do is ask, "Are you a Tigger or an Eeyore?"

Randy Pausch conveyed the importance of living, living not in remorse in what we didn't do but living within what we can and are doing. In "The Last Lecture" he reveals his personal journey to living.

I encourage you set aside the time, about an hour and half, and listen to his message within "The Last Lecture". Find out if you're a Tigger or an Eeyore. Find out how an ordinary man facing extraordinary odds changed the world.

Simple Debunking and Then whats...

In taking a break from resume bombing local HR offices, I thought about debunking steps that I think anyone can take. Conclusions of the paranormal are often reached due to sounds experienced in the home. So I thought I might address this issue casually.

Why does the paranormal manifest at night?

Well, if an entity is in a home, they're probably there all the time and just drowned out. What makes them more noticeable in evening hours is that people are usually more quiet at this period. You unwind, household duties are most likely done, and you're (hopefully) in a more relaxed state -- all of which makes noticing unusual sounds, feeling, and sights more noticed.

I keep hearing a strange knocking sound...

Okay... first, does your toilet run? Silly question but a running toilet can change the pressure in the lines of your home and generate water hammer. It's not a constant occurrence, can seem to come from one location, and happen any time of the day. Solution: Replace the mechanics inside the toilet.

Next... when was the last time you drained your water heater? Yeah, I said drained. Sediment build up, mud, an... can impact not only the life of your heater elements and water heater but can make the funkiest of sounds. Follow your manufacturers instructions on draining your water heater. Observe the Temperature and Pressure valve on your unit as well -- does it drip? Replace it. This too can contribute to water hammer and your high water bills.

When in doubt, contact a licensed and professional plumber.

I keep hearing knocks and I fixed my toilet...

Okay... now let's survey the outside of the home. Any branches that can bang on house? Is there a loose siding, gutter, light fixture or shutter? Are you electric, phone, and cable wires properly secured to the exterior? Do you see any insect damage to your home that might tempt a woodpecker to come for a snack? Is your attic vent blocked?

I fixed the toilet, the broken shutter, called out terminex but STILL there's a knocking...

Okay... to the attic!!! Now, with great caution find and enter your attic space. DO NOT STEP BETWEEN JOICE... this will make a huge mess of you and your ceiling. Look for signs of animals -- squirrels, opossum, mice, rats, birds, bats an... They like to nest in the isulation or from your lovely bare rafters. Sometimes they will sound if they are wearing combat boots when they run. Be extremely caution is you find any animals!! Contact animal control, county extension, wildlife management or someone in the yellow pages to remove them. You will need to find how they got in or they or their cousins will move back in.

Look for loose joints, moisture marks, stress indicators -- straight line winds can do a lot of damage that goes unnoticed, cracked beams can mean the load of the roof isn't being carried properly causing the wood or structure to pop, creak, and occassionally moan. Observe how your roof is cross braced, if you only have a triangle as a roof - consult a contractor- your house is most likely holding up the weight of your roof and complaining about it.

Okay, I fixed the toilet, fixed the shutter, Terminex came, I had the little moochers, I mean, squirrel family moved outta' the attic by WMA and STILL I hear knocking...

Wow... you've been productive. Let's see, let's rule out family, pets and neighborhood. Account for them and their behavior as much as you can. Rule out lil Timmy's jumping on the bed? The dogs were asleep at your feet? The dishwasher, washer and dryer aren't going? No fireworks going off at the neighbors down the street? No loud thumping, earth moving car audio systems are nearby. No noticeable air traffic? No quarry near by?

Ruled everything out above... start the journal.

I have cold spots in my house...

Okay... let's rule a few things out. Insulate around door and windows to rule out gaps. Caulk around frames and wire openings. Check the glazing on your windows to insure you haven't or about to lose a pane of glass. These steps will not only rule out breezes from nowhere but you'll love what it'll do to your electric bill. You might even notice a drop in the little creepy crawlers you've been seeing.

Okay... this next step sounds silly. Make sure you are not on, near, or under an air vent or fan. Yep- simple... but sometimes something so simple is overlooked. A ceiling fan left on can train the ear to ignore the hum and become a phantom breeze.

Next, make sure your chimney and vents to your home work properly. If either is improperly installed or is malfunctioning you may experience a draft from air backflowing into the house.

Okay... it wasn't an air vent, I don't have a chimney, I fixed the drafts - there's still a cold spot, now what?

Okay, time to pull out a thermometer. You can go get one of those quick reads if you want an instant read but a good old house thermometer or weather station and patience will work just as well.

FYI... Home Depot has a hand held IR Thermometer by Actron for under $40 if you feel you have to have an instant reading. Shop around, you might find a better deal... just remember what else are you going to use it for?

Now... you put this information in the journal and perhaps even track it on a map. If the spot and temp stays stationary... question the situation. If it moves, keep track.

I saw something!!!!

Okay... let's rule some things out.

Did you just wake up? Sometimes images of dreams live into the waking world because the brain hasn't snapped out of REM.

Were you in a confused, panicked or startled state? Yet again, rule out that you fell asleep. Sometimes we are so tired it just takes sitting down and relaxing and the body is gone and brain is still going a mile a minute. Your body slips, flops, or whatever and it triggers a snap response to save yourself and the brain still flying high and you see the imagery.

Are you on any meds that warn of hallucinations? You'd be surprised how many meds warn of this --especially sleep aids and anti-depressants.

Are you of a sound mind? (For southerners, are ya a little touched in the head?) Well, it's an honest question. It has to be asked. It has to be considered. Stress even has unusual impacts that science is working out now. If there is something that impacts your mental health, seek help-- seek answers. Throw of the shame, kick the fear outta' the way and find a way to take back what is yours -- YOU.

Was there a mirror or reflective service involved? Have to consider you saw yourself or the tv being reflected. Maybe it was the coat and hat on the chair in the curio mirror that looked like someone sitting behind you. Rule out your environment.

Okay... now start the journal and take some pictures.

THINGS YOU CAN DO....

Keep a Journal

Keeping a journal is a tremendous help. This will provide you and anyone you approach with chartable data. If you start to see a pattern, that gives you a starting place to work with.

Log the following information:
-Time and Date
-Location where you were
-What you heard - the more detail the better
-People Present
-Type of weather - calm, rainy, light breeze, sunny, ect
-Measure temps (if applicable)

Photograph

Go into the room you are having trouble in and turn on all the lights and just photo the room. Digital is fine. Film is fine. Either will work. These photos will establish any reflective surfaces you're aware or unaware of. Print them, don't leave them on the card -- PRINT THEM and then reformat your card. This a good habit to get into. That way your kid's 2nd birthday won't stay on the card until their 5. Review your photos, make notes and store these so you can refer to them.

Next, plan into your normal day to bring your camera with you into your location. Set no expections just relax like you normally do and do what you normally do and when the urge moves you or you think you're experiencing something snap a couple of pictures. Do this as long as you like. When your done-- PRINT THEM and reformat the card. Review your photos, make notes, compare them to your well lit shots and make notes.

Next, review your journal and photos. Are there any patterns? Any anomalies? Is it anything you can debunk? Is it anything that can go unexplained? Are you ready to give up or are you more curious than ever?

Next, plan another photo session into your normal activity. This time, feel free to announce that you are using a camera, a machine that will allow you to see your house guest. That you'd love to be able to share them with friends and family and if they could just help however they can. Yes, it sounds quacky -- talking to something you may or may not believe is there but if you're this far into this blog you must have some motivations or curiosity of the paranormal.

It's been suggested not to use action words like capture, take, or such as the negativity attached to the phrase may alienate older entities that are unfamiliar with the technology. Keep it simple and friendly.

Take all the photos you want. Ask the entity to appear on a sofa, in a chair or standing on the stair -- consider you're journal. Yet again -- PRINT THEM and compare to previous photos. Make notes. Do this step several times and keep trying the same steps and locations -- especially if you get a response.

EVP

Okay... EVP (Electronic Voice Phenonem) has so many different techniques around it, I'm just gonna' hit on the most basic form --The question and response. Use a digital or analog recorder with a counter. If using an analog recorder - fresh tapes only, particularly of high quality. Use an external mic -- in a pinch use the little simple mike off your computer. You can use your computer if you like -- you'll just have to find recording software that is reliable.

When you start recording, record who's participating, the time, the date and the location. Helps you know the specifics -- especially if you come back to review the tape.

Plan your questions -- plan your pauses. Give time for anything to respond. If you rattle off one after another with no pause, how would anyone get a word in edgewise. Establish yes responses -- a knock on a wall or table. Ask them to provide you with a knock, use that location and attempt/response to verify they meant to knock.

Plan to reiterate your questions in different forms if you get an answer -- Did you live here? KNOCK You lived in this house? no sound You lived on this property? KNOCK

Conclude your taping session with the time, date and location. If you move to a different room to work, you'll realize you moved when you review the tape.

Review the tape with headphones when you can be still, alert, and attentive. Don't immediately try to review it, you'll be tired. Get rest and set a time within the next 48 hours to review it.

Why headphones? Well, it allows you to have a better listen. It's also been theorized that listening to EVP's without them can act like a lighthouse beacon -- HEY! Paranormal activity here -- let's hook up!!!

Make notes-- note the tape counter, what you heard and any other little notes you feel like.

If you want more information than this little bit I've provided, there are plenty of resources out on the web. AA-EVP.com is a resource to start with.

Homework

You will need to do some work. Look into the history of your home and/or property. County archives, newspapers archives, elderly neighbors on your block, ect. Dig for information- be relentless. If you thing something happened you'll have to look for it. If you don't know where to start, I suggest your local library and the reference librarian.

At any point... seek help from a paranormal group that you've researched. If you don't feel comfortable trying some of the interactive research steps, then don't. Provide what you can with as much details as possible to your local group you feel comfortable with. If a group comes to investigate and you don't feel comfortable about it, stop them at the door and tell them you're not comfortable with them. Work with who and what you are comfortable with.

A Theory on UV’s impact on entities

Okay, one of my many theories...

I looked into UV light, visual perception and UV capable fauna. So I'll try to gather thoughts on my research...

It's greatly known that Bees and Kestrels (a few other birds of prey as well) still possess the cones that are required for UV perceptions. Somewhere along the lines of development - the human eye lost the ability to interpret light outside of the visual spectrum. According to one theory, light is composed of 3 groups - your short (xray, microwave, ect), your medium (the visual sprectrum) and your long (which is UV, "black" light, an...) Humans are regretfully (for the most part) relegated primarily to the medium.

Now, one of the theories on paranormal activity is that an entity draws energy to create energy (sounds, apparitions, ect.) Now with the creation of this energy comes covalent bonds - which is a form of chemical bonding that is characterized by the sharing of pairs of electrons between atoms. (Yes, yes, I'm an uber geektress. I won't deny it.)

Okay -- energy involves atoms -- neutrons, electrons, and protons. Fusion - the joining of atoms. (Fission- the splitting of atoms.) Now, it has been proven by science that UV light breaks down covalent bonds. In the skin that means breaking down the cell - usually collagen (that's what gives skin its tight and suppleness.)

So in the case of an entity trying to generate an energy form - using the UV light cause an fission process within the constructed covalent bonds. So essentially, the covalent bonds are dispersed and the entity flees because it cannot construct the necessary bonds to communicate/present itself.

So, that's my theory on the impact of UV light on an entity and it's potential structuring.

Auditorium- Undisclosed location- UPDATE

Thought I would post a curiosity that has occurred at the undisclosed Auditorium location for anyone of curiosity.

An attempt was made to have a dog enter the building that house's the Auditorium. Attempts were made a three entrances - basement-- 8 steps down, front-- 10 steps up, and side-- ramp that leads directly into the auditorium. The dog refused to budge at any entrance. It whined, back peddled, strained to get away and refused to budge with a push.

I was told that this wasn't the first attempt to get the dog to enter. The previous attempt had gone just like this one -- utter refusal to enter.

I did manage to debunk a few sounds that had been heard by a few people lately. There's a gap in the foundation and the upper level as well as between the outer facade and inner walls in the upper levels that apparently house various feathered and fuzzies ones seeking protection from the weather.

It's been difficult to gain access to the auditorium as of late due to activities that are planned and executed there. I hope that once it slows down to get back into the area and try some more investigating.

A Point of Curiosity -- Religion and the Paranormal

Another point of curiousity....

Not everyone is a member of mainstream religion. Even if they are, they may not think alike. This may or may not be something an investigator or group has encountered yet but may eventually. Sometimes these differences can create a point of difficulty in investigations -- relating to the point of view of the client, searching for resolutions for certain encounters, or purely addressing the issues at hand.

Religion can be a diversive topic.

It can generate anger when misunderstood.

Occassionally, groups suggest or use certain ritual or ceremony to bless, cleanse, or exorcise a home.

Anyone run into a religious barrier they've had to overcome?
Anyone walked away due to religious differences?
Anyone recommended a ritual or ceremony for a purpose to a client?
Anyone work with a group or person of non-traditional system?

Any comments on religion and the paranormal??

PLEASE... NO HATE SPEECH.

Preoccupation...

I apologize for not being able to blog much on my research in the past few weeks. Traditional preoccupations -- job hunting and bills -- and research -- pooka, wee folk and human levels and transitions in cognition -- have slowed my blogging. (The research appears to be another 3 year effort for each.)

The drawback to research is that I start with one topic and it bifurcates. Then, of course, I'm drawn to add it to the list of research and so on. (A never ending cycle of reseach and learning-- at least I'm not stagnating in boredom.)

I hope to be able to pick up the blogging pace going forth. The Beyond Reality Radio Event forum provided the input I was looking for on Media's Impact on Paranormal Research and hopefully I can pull those thoughts together soon.

If there's any topic suggestions, please send them and I'll look into it. If you want to call into question any point of research -- go ahead add them to the comment of the blog. Feedback is greatfully appreciated.

Marsden- The Journal of a Ghosthunter

Simon Marsden's The Journal of a Ghosthunter (1994, Little, Brown, and Co.) is literally Marsden's journal on his pursuits of the paranormal. The book is beautifully and hauntingly photographed. The pictures themselves tell a story. I will needlessly say, this is a definite have to buy for me - just for the photography alone.

Marsden starts his journey in Southern Ireland and transverses the UK, France, Germany and Romania - weaving the tales of its history, the people he encounters and image he captured to round out his ventures. His visits include some of the recently publicized locations such as Castle Frankenstein and Dracula's Grave.

It's not a book filled with actual encounters but of a man's journey to some of Europe's most regailled hauntings. He visits touch the land of the lost Cathars, the suffering within many of the castles - Versaille, Laurenstein, and adventures among The Burren.

If you get a chance, take a look inside. You may find yourself as haunted by the tales and imagery as Marsden was.

Camera Maintainance and a Bit More

Camera Care

Perhaps a commonly overlooked practice among non-professional photographers is camera maintainance. It's simple and should be done absolutely every time before an investigation. By maintaining your lens, you'll capture less "orbs" and prolong the life of your lens.

The best cloth to use on your lens are those manufactured of microfibre. A great place to pick one up is a vision center, they're marketed for cleaning glasses. A soft cotton tee can be used in a pinch, however, the vision center clothes are so small they can easily be slid into the smallest of cases. Don't use paper - tissue, towel, or otherwise - the micro-strand structure will scratch your lens.

Another cleaning tool for your lens is canned air. Be in mind, compressed air will chill your lens and on hot and/or moist locations you may experience condensation which will need to be cleaned away quickly. However, can air is still a great tool for keeping the tiny inset lens of some many models clean. Of course, you can use those tiny "wind-wand" style brushes but beware of breakage of the bristles.

Don't forget to clean viewfinders and digital screens as well. A smudge or dust particle on one of these may give you a false view of your field of study. Just wipe them with the same cloth you wipe your lens with.

Store your camera in a case. One, this will protect your investment. Two, this will cut down on dust contamination when not in use. It doesn't have to be a fancy metal case, a simple neoprene velcro case will work. A consideration might be a belt loop or carbiner clip for easy toting on investigations.

Keep fresh batteries for your camera. Low batteries can result in poor image results and malfunctions - blurring, abnormal color processing, poor JPEG down-processing and other abnormalities.

Types of Rechargeable Batteries

In the case of digital camera's, rechargeables are your best bet since they literally eat them. Understanding battery performance may help in some cases. (Refer to your owner's manual for the best battery for your camera.)

Nickel Cadmium - NiCads- NiCd batteries have a longer life cycle and hold a charge longer. NiCd's can also withstand a "deeper" discharger than most rechargeables - meaning you can push the battery a little further, like periodic rest to let the cell to rebuild and try more shots. However, the NiCd's have two drawbacks - cost and poor functionality at cold temperatures.

Nickel-Metal Hydride - NiMH batteries have higher voltage output than your NiCd's but discharger quicker and their lifespan is limited. The NiMH experiences a voltage drop as it discharges which may impact the image and functionality of your camera.

Lithium-ion battery is one of the latest marketed rechargeable batteries and most widely used by consumers. As so far, it features the greatest technology - it doesn't retain a memory of it's previous charge, so it will fully charge each time; the energy-to mass ratios are much improved over it's predecessors, so more energy in the smaller technology; and it's ambient energy loss when not in use is much lower than it's predecessors as well.

A few tips...

Always be aware of your surrounding. Yes, basic, but there's nothing like having your camera in hand and sidestepping to get a shot and falling right over something. If your lucky-- you break neither the camera or yourself when you fall.

An environmental contaminate may impact your shot. Reflective surface - mirrors, metal, glazed pottery (which oddly enough, can luminesce awkwardly depending on composition of the clay or glaze components). An unnoticed light source - a night light, a street nearby, activity lights on motion sensors or fire sensing equipment. Air conditioner vent that may dump dust when it kicks on or causes movement in objects. A list that could go on forever.

If you're using a 35mm, pick the correct film.

400 - the most basic, not for closeup
Outdoor use - sports with some blurring possible
Indoor use - is for moderate light and is suggest to shoot one with flash, one without

800 - Indoors -nighttime use with extended the flash distance
Outdoors - stops fast action and allows for higher shutter speed
Helps reduce blur in fast-action situations
Captures subjects in low-light conditions
Easy to get, moderately priced, and can be used in place of 1000 and 1600

1000 - Low light and stops fast action
Not for enlargement - nothing over 5x7

1600 - Is best suited for nighttime photography and extreme low light conditions
Can be expensive and using flash with this film can make it look like day in your exposures
Not for enlargement - 5x7

Understanding Shutter speed

Looking at a 35mm camera - there is often a dial that features a series of numbers (something like):

B, 1, 2, 4, 8, 15, 30, 60, 120, 250, 500, 1000

B - Bulb, holds the shutter open. (depending on the camera, as long as you hold the shutter button)
1-30 - require a tripod, hold the shutter open for a period of seconds
60-1000 - can be handheld, but steadied

By adjusting the dial you can either add or subtract the amount of time your shutter is open. Your dealing with seconds, but in the case of film it can make a big difference. In darker situations, by moving toward the B you extend the amount of time the shutter is open and thus allowing more light to impact the film and getting more detail. In brighter situations, by moving away from the B and towards 1000, you shorten the time the shutter is open and decreasing the amount of light hitting the film.

This is, of course, the most rudimentary explanation of how these number impact your exposure/film. If you want more information on film photography, I recommend the Ansel Adams series on photography. (I, personally, stumbled onto one of these books and have fallen in love with it. It's much better than the textbook I had to have for photography at University recently - yes, I recently attained a degree in Art. Though I've been photographing for nearly 20 years, it's hard for me to explain to others how I do it and the Ansel Adam's book has helped.)

Digital features

This section will be hard to address since the models differ so much. It is key that you read your manual to see if you have features that will allow the adaptation to low lighting or speed. Most digital camera's feature a little running figure - this is your high speed setting. It will stop actions and minimalize blur - as long as YOU don't move.

I have a feature that allows for shots at night with a tripod. It will stop action in extreme low light but I cannot hand hold for it. I, therefore, purchased a tabletop tripod at the Dollar Tree (yay, one dollar). I can adapt the tripod, I've used it against walls or door frames as well to steady the camera. Just because it's small and says tabletop doesn't mean just leave the camera on the horizontal. Get creative - sometimes the situation requires it.

Most people operate their cameras in auto mode, never considering other settings. You can get some nice shots on auto - I won't deny it. Review the manual and you might be surprised what it can actually do.

Inside Digital Imaging - RAW vs JPEG
(AKA Perhaps a Tad Too Technical Explanation To How Your Camera Sees and Records an Image)

According to Adobe.com color in RAW format - the image is achieved by the use of a 2-d area array that collects photons that record the image. The rows and columns are comprised of either charge-coupled devices or complementary metal oxide semiconductors. The role of the filter array is to turn the raw grayscale image into a color image. The array conductors are either coated in a red or green or blue filter that will be the only color that particular array will capture. It is possible for the filters to be cyan or yellow or magenta which allows for more light filtration.

So, the initial array captures a grayscale image. It is the filters atop each array that add the color artifact. (Artifact- the color being reflected by the object.) It is also the encrypted metadata the allows for the later creation of a color image. The metadata defines not only the camera model, serial number, shutter speed, aperture, focal length, and if the flash was initiated but the positioning of the type of color filter sitting atop of a particular array. Metadata of the image files allows for interpolation between the color artifacts to fill in any missing pixels by using its neighbor's information.

In JPEG images, the raw converter is built into the camera and compresses all that data into a 8 x 8 pixel block foundation. The metadata will be stored into the JPEG file. However, many manufactures have JPEG compression algorithms discard bit of usable range that may impact the production or editing of the image at a later time. This applies is a heavy color compression and can lead to color degradation especially in editing. JPEG is limited to 8 bits of tonal information per channel versus the raw capacity of 12 bits. An additional drawback to JPEG is that it will be unable to benefit from upgrades in technology and software unlike RAW files.

Since I have thoroughly succeeded in providing more information than most care to know about the JPEG, I think I'll stop at this point and encourage all camera operators to review their manuals and what form their image is stored in, and constantly clean your lens.

As always, I welcome any questions, comments, criticisms and so on.

Ghost Radar -- Detect Ghost and Port Data

GHOST RADAR
http://www.ghostradar.co.uk/

Keep your GhostRadar in your pocket or handbag, in case you're alone in the dark. Or go anywhere creepy. Or know anyone creepy. Just in case.

TO SEE, OR NOT TO SEE

GhostRadar has been developed by Solid Alliance and GRX, a virtual organisation that investigates energy fields and the paranormal. However, using technology to detect ghosts is an emerging expertise: there's a lot to learn.

GhostRadar does not guarantee to detect ghosts, nor does it imply that they exist. But it might, and they may. However, your interaction, emotional state, and belief system, may be important factors in interpreting events.

BATTERIES

GhostRadar comes with a CR2016 battery installed, but it won't work until you pull out the thin plastic battery-protector. It will check for ghosts every 15 minutes. To replace the battery, unscrew the case from the back.

USING YOUR GHOST RADAR

You can hold your Ghost Radar, or let it hang from one of the two supplied straps. However, it will not collect data if it's very near anything metallic or magnetic.

Since most supernatural events happen in the late evening or at night, it's probably better to use your GhostRadar in low-light environments.

DETECTING GHOSTS

The button at the bottom is the on-off switch. Pressing it once, turns your GhostRadar on. The light will flash eight times as it gathers data. The next colour, which will fade on and off eight times, represents the Ghost Radar's findings.

COLOUR INTERPRETATION

red -------------- there's a ghost nearby, so move away
yellow ---------- there was a ghost nearby recently, so take care
green ----------- all clear
blue-green ------ there may be a guardian spirit nearby, so listen to what it tells you
blue------------- there's a guardian spirit nearby, so concentrate on your hopes

Your GhostRadar is looking for unexpected or sudden changes, and uses an algorithm to analyse the sensor data. If it detects any phantom presence, it beeps to help you assess any risk possibilities.

If you feel it's a malevolent spirit, pressing the button for two seconds will change the local electromagnetic field and, hopefully, scare the ghost away.

Detecting unknown energies, ghosts, sprits, and entities, or seeing mysterious apparitions, is not common: so you won't detect something every few minutes. They don't appear just because you're waiting, watching, and hoping.

And remember, your interaction, emotional state, and belief system, may be important factors in interpreting any events.

The Ghost Radar originally debuted in the UK at 60 Euros but now can be purchased at 14.99.

THE NEW VERSION
http://www.usbstore.co.uk/ghos.htm

Ghost Radar locates ghosts, spirits, and other entities. Its sensors detect and combine any significant related changes in electro-magnetic turbulence, heat, light, and biometrics which are believed to accompany any mysterious apparitions.

Ghost Radar measures 89mm x 57mm x 12mm, and is powered by one CR2032 3V battery. It has three energy sensors, a bio-feedback sensor, a clock-timer, a sixteen-light array, an on-off button, a mode button, a beeper, and a UV LED.

It includes a tiny USB flash drive storage device, which lights up when it's busy, for your documents, photos, i-tunes, and movies. It needs no installation, uses no batteries, and works with any modern PC or MAC.
This can also improve the general performance of Windows Vista: a feature called ReadyBoost allows Vista to use the flash memory as extra system RAM.

According to USAToday, the new version of this Ghost Radar/Flash Drive is expensive. "In Japan, GhostRadar costs about twice as much as a regular memory storage unit at 19,800 yen (US$185; euro140) for 512 megabytes, according to Yokohama-based SolidAlliance.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Originally created for use in Japan where the paranormal is culturally ingrained and celebrated, the Ghost Radar has found its way into the common markets of the world. According to The Times- London 2005 article(reproduced at Independent.IE) of the products, it alleges to detect 8 different types of "spectres".

Brooklyn Group Gives Paranormal Investigators a Bad Name at $20 per hour

Brooklyn-based paranormalists will clear out your ghosts for $20 an hour

Samantha Ramirez (left), Sal Cicconi (center) and Sergio Ocasio have formed Brooklyn Ghost Investigations.

Not surprisingly, they are fans of the 1984 film 'Ghostbusters.'

.. --> ARTICLE CONTENT START -->
It's Ghostbusters, Brooklyn-style.

A team of self-made paranormalists is offering to come over to your house in the middle of the night to chase away any unwanted spirits.

"I'm fascinated with the supernatural," says Sal Cicconi, 27.

Cicconi, along with Sergio Ocasio, 20, and Samantha Ramirez, 18, have plastered Brooklyn offering their services for just $20 an hour.

Their business plan is a bit unorthodox, but then again, so are they.

"When I was a kid, I had this ability, this gift," Cicconi said in an interview in the trio's East New York apartment. "When I was 10 years old, I started to see things - spirits and ghosts."

The three, who call themselves Brooklyn Ghost Investigations, are otherwise unemployed.

Their only client is a Red Hook man who said he had two ghosts in his apartment.

Cicconi and Ocasio went to the man's apartment and waited until 3 a.m. - the witching hour for paranormal activity - to see if they could talk to the ghosts.

"I caught something on camera," Cicconi said.

"It looked like two lights moving around, like the spirits were playing with each other."

"We tried to get them out of there," he said.

The two used a homemade Ouija board to try to coax the ghosts into talking to them - with no luck.

"Sometimes, spirits are afraid to talk or to show themselves to us," he said.

Not surprisingly, the three are big fans of the 1984 classic "Ghostbusters."

Having no formal training, they also watch Sci Fi Channel's "Ghost Hunters" and A&E's "Paranormal State" for tips.

They say business has been a bit slow - but maybe that's not such a bad thing.

Twenty dollars an hour, to do what most of us will do for free???

And they use a Ouija board to communicate with spirits and boogeymen??? Not the brightest crayons in the box, IMO.

Anyone else disgusted, outraged, and or petrified by this group and what a detriment they are to those who approach the paranormal more seriously and scientifically?

Feedback welcome as always.

Mass Casualty Incident Investigation Considerations

There are some considerations for investigating Mass Casualty Incidents -- MCI's. I'm not inferring not to do them, some of the largest MCI's sites in history are on my wishlist of investigations. What I do suggest is... prepare yourself and make time for some additional considerations. MCI's are battlefields, man-made tragedies, and natural tragedies. Often spirits at MCI sites are unaware they may have passed due to the suddeness of the events and may ask for "help".

A preparation to consider is the possible emotional toll that investigating such a site might cause on you and your team. The occurrence of an emotional tsunami is always a possibility. Some pre-planning beyond the normal investigation may be needed. Which members of your group are better suited for this investigation? Is there someone still dealing with the loss of a loved one or someone exhibiting signs of stress that should stay behind? Is there sensitives in your group that you may or may not want to come along and are they prepared for emotional bombardment? What are some of the contingents to address any emotional encounters? Exit plans should be generated should this situation arise- does the affected person and one transporter leave or is it the whole team? What post-investigation coping system will be set up?

The safety of the team should be priority over achieving an investigation. Giving up on a site because the group or a member is over-wrought with emotion isn't a bad thing. You've lost nothing. You didn't fail. Any experience is a learning experience-- set backs are just that, set backs. Maybe more preparation is needed or maybe MCI's aren't for your group. Sit down, review the aspects of the investigation and determine the next course of events. Maybe counseling sessions, peer-to-peer support efforts, or spiritual exercises are needed to reinforce the member or the whole team. Safety first-- spiritual, emotional, and physical.

Another consideration for investigating a MCI site is the impact upon survivors or family members. A realization that an investigation may re-open wounds and emotional wells needs to be heavily considered. Any investigation is invasive- however, for survivors and family members who's loved one may be "wandering around" and inquired to may suffer at the hands of the investigator. This may be counter-active to their belief they passed quickly and are now "safely on the otherside".

If it is a relatively new MCI, do not rely on survivors or family members for validation of your information, even if they are the one's that requested your investigation, broach any research into "lingering" spirits discovered through other sources. The survivor or family member may be attempting to use you a coping mechanism-- hopefully you will discover this in your initial interview -- but unless you are a qualified grief counselor, refer them to one and suggest they cope with the grief first. It is crucial that the grieving process be addressed, for the health and safety of the survivor or family member as well as your investigation team.

The emotional threat from an MCI doesn't remain at the site, it may lie in your evidence as well. You may need to prepare yourself for that voice that weakly calls for help. Sounds of crying children. Voices of anger-- imagine confusion about your situation compounded by the inability to communicate-- resounding from an EVP. The off chance that you encounter "lower-level entity" or demons in the situation is a possibility as well -- distress and fear are powerful draws essentially. (I'm not saying their present at all MCI's but the probability is there. Better to be aware by the possibility.)

An additional consideration is possible ethical dilemmas that arise from an MCI investigation. Do you investigate an MCI? Do you keep your investigation results private or publish them? You find out that there are spirits that haven't "crossed over"-- what do you do? Do you try to cross them yourself or do you contact a spiritual leader? A survivor or family member becomes outraged by your investigation -- what do you do?

Mass Casualty Incidents essentially generate a web of questions and consideration for anyone investigating. Planning, preparations, and contigencies should be layed out in advance and initated when needed. It is crucial to remember -- safety and welfare of all involved parties is number one -- be it the spirits, survivors, family members, or the team.

As always- comments, criticisms, insights, and experiences are welcome.

Are EVP’s dangerous?

Recently, a question was posed to me -- Are EVP's dangerous? Well, I won't deny it -- I haven't been doing this long, so I thought I'd do some research. EVP- Electronic Voice Phenomenon- is the presentation of a disincarnate voices in recorded media that wasn't audible at the time of recording. The "voices" can be recorded on analog or digital recorders. The option of using white noise or no backgroud noise are readily practiced. There are even some "boxes" available or constructable to assist in EVP attempts. Techniques are as variable as the individuals doing the EVP work.

When wondering how EVP's are possibly recorded, the theories of reality come into question. Much like the techniques for achieving EVP recordings, the theories on migration after death exist. Perhaps the article EVP and the Vatican : Vatican Okays Transcommunication, offers an explanation for the occurrence EVP's being recorded as, "...The entire Universe, the Ether consists of vibration, Energy, and of particular importance in this case the Electric and Magnetic "fluids". These "fluids" are not actually liquids as recognised in the physical world, but rather the electric and magnetic characteristics of the Universal Fire and Water elements. It is the electro-magnetic propagation properties of the Ether that allows the vibrations of the communications of the Spirit voices, thought waves in the form of Energy, to pass through the electromagnetic continuum of the Ether and thus to be recorded on magnetic tape." ( http://evp-itc-australia.org/29.html )

One of the biggest considerations, as in paranormal research, is the mindset of the individual(s) wishing to contact via EVP's. Flustration, anger, anxiety and other tumultuous energies can act as an attractant to "low level" entities as well as sufficient energy for dark entities and demons. These entities continue to flustrate and exacerbate these rawer emotions to their benefit. Just like in an investigation -- one has to realize at what point to stop, leave, and let the energy dissipate.

The Butlers in their article for AAEVP, A Brief Discussion About the Safety of Communicating with the Other Side, recount a good example:

"Harold Sherman, in an article written for Psychic Observer &
Chimes, recounted a friend's distressing experience in
trying to reach his wife and running into what he called "low
grade discarnates." When the man lost his temper and told
them to go away, it only seemed to increase their interference.
Sherman listened to some of the recordings and called it
pure drivel.

"Sherman came to the conclusion that the mental attitude of the
experimenter played an important part in what was
recorded. He wrote, 'It is as though low grade intelligences
come in on the emotionally disturbed 'wave length' of the
operator. Unless the mind is prepared through prayer or a
spiritually motivated meditative period, one is apt to invite
the wrong kind of communicants.'"

A positive outlook and spirituality seem to aid in the "filtering" of the "low level" entities. Often prayers or meditation are recommended prior to beginning an EVP session to "still" oneself. Some even suggest reciting the prayer of St. Michael the Archangel before beginning any paranormal work or review. The employment iconography, talisman, or whatever spiritual items that would bring one comfort can be used. Greg Myers of Paranormal Task Force makes the point, "Never forget, the unknown does not have to resort to physical attacks and it can get inside your mind and mentally or psychologically en stow harm as well." ( http://www.paranormaltaskforce.com/evpwarn.html )

Fear is a great weapon, a powerful emotion, fear is tool of much darker things in this and other worlds and as FDR is widely quoted, "... Only thing we have to fear is fear itself". AA-EVP.com article, A Brief Discussion About the Safety of Communicating with the Other Side, reviewed the effort Jules and Maggie Harsch-Fischbach article, "...If you, at anytime, think you are in contact with low level entities, leave your tape recorder. Remain in control at all times... Negative thoughts, such as fear or hate, are powerful forms of energy, and this energy can accumulate and do harm...We advise people who are fearful of the unknown or who might have trouble keeping the voices in perspective, to pass on EVP. Our concern is that a person's fear might tend to be amplified by a close encounter with an entity." ( http://www.aaevp.com/articles/articles_about_safety.htm )

No actual example of harm from EVP work seems to been reported. Occassionally, a person may be "harassed". It doesn't have to be the researcher at the time, it may be someone listening to an EVP and then experiences "activity". I stumbled upon one of the best descriptions of an EVP acting as a "beacon" from a staff moderator, Keith Deel, at an I Am Haunted.com forum, "... It gives the spirit 'recognition' and can act like a beacon. Especially playing them aloud. Imagine if your neighbor started playing your recorded voice on a 5000 watt amplifier? You would come running to tell him to stop. Then imagine a open plane of existence where physical boundaries are limitless. Can they hear you play the audio? Perhaps. When dealing with demonic, the 'collective' is so vast, the demons who's 'voice' is recorded and played back, will come to you no matter where they currently reside in the universe..." (http://www.iamhaunted.com/forum/posts/id_1477/ )

The a similar point to the "beacon effect" was made by Greg Myers of Paranormal Task Force, that listening to EVP or observing footage may aggravate an existing paranormal situation. Myers states, "If you already have a home or are at a location which already has paranormal activity then playing certain audio or video of the unknown may greatly increase the activity you have been experiencing and if the audio or video of the unknown came from a negative source then you could possibly allow such into your home and life by listening or viewing it." ( http://www.paranormaltaskforce.com/evpwarn.html )

The "activity" that follows for some that have listened to EVP's they captured themselves or on websites has generated many groups to post warnings on their sites. Cautionary efforts by many groups and individuals for something that hasn't had a lot of documentation are everywhere. The lack of documentation doesn't mean it doesn't occur -- it just means efforts to collect data on the subject hasn't come to fruition yet. If activity does occur, contacting a faith practioner or an experienced paranormal group may be required. One has to realize -- you are taking actions that may have a ramification, you are responsible for this action. If you have fear of the unknown, paranormal, or demonic -- it is up to you to make a judgement call to listen or view paranormal material not the TV show, website, or host site.

Perhaps the greatest danger to EVP work is the over-absorption in the activity. An individual who's soul-purpose is to catch the most EVP's or a "trophy" EVP rather than investigate to seek a resolution for the person or people who need help fall into this category. An individual who focuses so much on attaining EVP of past loved one, devoting hours, days, years to the pursuit and letting the world past them by, falls into this category as well. As it's been said-- everything in moderation, excess is unhealthy.

As in any activity, their are risk to consider and EVP is not exception. In attaining EVP's, we sometimes open ourselves up emotionally and this is when the danger from things other than ourselves is greatest. However, I think the greatest threat from EVP is ourselves -- fear, obsessions, and misdirected motivations.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As always, I look foward to comments, criticism, input and additional information anyone would like offer.
